Entry Requirements for Foreigners Traveling to Kenya

This information is for foreigners planning to travel to Kenya for the first time. Such a trip can be an exciting adventure, but it's essential to be well informed about the entry requirements to ensure compliance with immigration rules and regulations. 1. Passport and Identity Documents

Upon arrival, all travelers, including foreign nationals, Kenyans, and residents, must appear before an immigration officer with a passport or a valid travel document that is at least 6 months valid

They are also required to provide biometric data, including facial photographs and fingerprints.

2. Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

To enter or transit through Kenya, you must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) or a visa unless you come from a visa exempt country.

An immigration officer may request several documents depending on the purpose of your visit, including:

  • An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)
  • An Entry Permit
  • Return or onward tickets, or proof of onward travel arrangements
  • A hotel booking or the physical address and contact information of your host
  • Invitation Letter from your Host
  • A detailed travel itinerary for your time in Kenya

3. Compliance with Health Regulations

Travelers must meet health and vaccination requirements before entering Kenya. It is important to be aware of necessary health precautions, particularly vaccinations. 

All travelers arriving from countries where yellow fever is endemic must present a valid yellow fever certificate as proof of immunization. Kenya requires this proof at least 10 days before arrival.

The vaccination is also available at selected Points of Entry/Exit and other designated government health facilities.

Items valued up to $2, 000 per traveler are exempt from import tax if declared correctly. If the value exceeds this limit, passengers must complete the Passenger Declaration Form (F88) before arrival.

Generally, exempt personal and household items include previously used personal or household items such as ;

    • Clothing
    • Perfume (up to 250 ml)
    • Cigarettes (up to 200 sticks)
    • Liquor (up to 1 litre)
    • Beer or wine (up to 2 litres)

Important customs reminders when travelling to Kenya:-

  1. Declare any new purchases that may incur duties.
  2. Goods in diplomatic bags are usually exempt customs clearance unless suspicious items prompt further inspection.

5. Travel Insurance to Protect Your Trip

It is important to thoroughly research your destinations and secure a suitable travel insurance.

Your insurance policy should comprehensively cover your itinerary, including any planned activities, as well as provide financial protection in case of emergencies.

This ensures a safe and well prepared travel experience.

6. Currency Restrictions for Entry

If you are bringing a currency or monetary instruments valued at more than $10,000 or the foreign equivalent, you must declare them at Customs upon arrival and before departure.

7. Respecting the Conditions of Stay in Kenya

It is important for travelers to adhere to the conditions outlined in their eTA or entry permit. These conditions include;

  1. Participating only in activities that are allowed under the specific type of entry permit or visitor's pass  granted.
  2. Travelers must avoid any unlawful activities, such as working without a valid work permit or engaging in criminal behavior.
  3. It is important not to exceed the authorized period of stay granted by the entry permit.
